Day 4
Earth’s Crammed with Heaven
Read Exodus 3:1-6 and ponder this part of the story for a moment. See how Moses only heard God speak after he had turned his full attention to what was before him.
“Earth's crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God,
But only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.”
—Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Prompt:
Go outside to a place where you’re around some living things. Stand still, taking a few deep breaths. Intentionally use as many senses as you can to slowly take in your surroundings. What do you smell? How many sounds can you isolate?
Now choose one thing around you see— either something new or something you normally pass by each day without a second thought. Take some time to study it, looking longer than normal and noting any details you observe or what it makes you think of. Do you notice any beauty that you hadn’t seen before?
Now, pick up your pen. Using as much descriptive language as possible, use your words to paint a picture of what you just observed. Fill a page or two. Try to use several similes and metaphors in your description as well.
Thank the Lord for His brilliance in what He made and the privilege to enjoy it with Him. This has all been worship! Ask Him if there’s anything He wants to speak to your heart.
Before you leave, take a picture of what you observed. Try to capture it in a way that accentuates what stood out to you.
(Bonus— Draw or paint what you observed to commemorate the moment!)
